Run those seven on any bottle, including ours. At the end, we do exactly that, and we don't score a perfect grade.
If you've bought three bottles that did nothing, the problem usually wasn't you. The hair-loss market is built for people who are anxious, under-served by their doctors, and researching in six-to-eighteen-month cycles, which is a polite way of saying it's built for people who are easy to sell to. The good news is that the tricks are finite and repetitive. Once you can name them, most of the market's fog burns off, and you're left with the small number of products actually worth your attention.
This is a detector you can carry into any product page, any Reddit thread, any Instagram ad. Seven questions. We'll define each one, show you what the tell looks like in the wild, and then, because a framework you only point at competitors is just marketing, we'll turn all seven on Unfurl and grade ourselves in public.
Question 1: Is this a drug claim wearing cosmetic clothing?
Start here, because it's the fastest filter. In the US, the line between a cosmetic and a drug is about claims, not ingredients. A cosmetic can affect the appearance of your hair and scalp. The moment a product claims to "regrow hair," "treat hair loss," "block DHT," or "reverse balding," it is, legally speaking, making a drug claim, and the FDA's own guidance on whether a product is a cosmetic, a drug, or both draws exactly that line.
Here's why this matters for your wallet: only two oral/topical drugs (minoxidil and, by prescription, finasteride) have cleared the FDA's bar to make regrowth claims for pattern hair loss. If a serum, shampoo, or gummy is promising drug-level outcomes without being a drug, one of two things is true: either it's making a claim it can't legally support, or it quietly contains a drug it isn't declaring. Neither is a product you want. The tell: watch for the verbs. "Regrows," "treats," "prevents," "cures" are drug verbs. "Supports the appearance of," "helps maintain a healthy-looking scalp" are cosmetic verbs. A brand that respects the line will use the honest verbs even though the dishonest ones sell better.
Question 2: Is the study on the ingredient, or on the finished product?
This is the single most common sleight of hand in the category, so slow down here. A brand will cite a legitimate study, say, Fischer and colleagues' 2007 work on caffeine and hair follicles, and let you assume the study was run on their bottle. It almost never was. The study was on the raw ingredient, often at a concentration and delivery method nothing like the finished formula.
An ingredient having published evidence tells you the ingredient is plausible. It tells you nothing about whether this specific product contains enough of it, in a form that reaches the follicle, to do anything. Finished-product trials, where the actual bottle is tested against placebo on actual humans, are expensive, and most brands (ours included) don't run them. That's not automatically damning. It just means you should mentally downgrade "backed by science" to "contains an ingredient that has some science," which is a much weaker and more honest claim. Question 3: Was it a human, a cell dish, or a mouse?
Rank the evidence by what it was actually done on, because the gap between a petri dish and a person is enormous. In-vitro studies (cells or follicles in a dish) show a mechanism is possible, useful, but the follicle in a dish has no bloodstream, no hormones, no scalp. Mouse studies add a living system, but mouse hair cycles differently from human hair, and the graveyard of hair treatments that worked in mice and failed in people is large. Randomized, placebo-controlled human trials are the only tier that tells you what happens to a person.
Most exciting-sounding ingredient headlines are in-vitro or mouse work. That doesn't make them worthless; it makes them a starting point, not a finish line. The tell: when a claim cites "studies show," find out which tier. A brand leaning on a mouse study while implying human results is hoping you won't ask. Question 4: Who funded it, was it blinded, and what was n?
Three numbers decide whether a study means much: who paid, whether it was blinded, and how many people were in it. A trial funded by the company selling the product isn't automatically wrong, but it's exactly the situation where you want independent replication before you believe the number. A trial that wasn't blinded, where patients and assessors knew who got the real product, is wide open to wishful thinking, because hair improvement is partly judged by eye and the eye sees what it hopes to. And a trial with 20 people can't reliably detect a modest effect; a promising result in a tiny, unblinded, self-funded study is a hypothesis, not a proof.
This is the standard we hold everyone to, including ingredients we like. When we covered saw palmetto, we flagged that the best head-to-head trial was open-label and that a topical study lacked a proper placebo arm, not to dismiss the ingredient, but because you deserve to know the shape of the evidence, not just its direction. The tell: a percentage with no sample size, no funding disclosure, and no mention of blinding is a marketing figure, not a finding.
Question 5: Are "clinically proven" and "proprietary complex" doing unearned work?
Two phrases should make your hand pause before it reaches for a credit card. "Clinically proven" is not a regulated term with a fixed meaning. It can describe a rigorous trial, or a consumer-perception survey where 34 people said their hair "felt fuller." Unless the brand links the actual study so you can check the tier, the funding, and the n, treat "clinically proven" as decoration. "Proprietary complex" (or "blend," or "matrix") is the other one. It usually means the brand is naming a marketing term instead of disclosing how much of each active is actually in the bottle. A real formulator who put a meaningful dose of a real active in a product generally wants to tell you which one and roughly how much. A "proprietary complex" that hides the amounts is often hiding that the amounts are trace.
Regulators have repeatedly caught the category overreaching on exactly this kind of language. The US Federal Trade Commission's health-products advertising guidance is explicit that marketers must hold "competent and reliable scientific evidence" before making a health claim, and the agency notes it has brought more than 200 cases against supplement and health-product marketers for claims they could not back up. The lesson isn't that one company is bad; it's that the market's default setting is to say more than the evidence supports, and "clinically proven" plus "proprietary complex" is how it's usually done.
Question 6: Has the before-and-after been staged, or stolen?
Treat every before-and-after as staged until proven otherwise, because the easiest thing to manipulate in this entire category is a pair of photos. The variables are all free to the seller: lighting (flat, shadowless light in the "after" hides scalp show; harsh overhead light in the "before" exaggerates it), the width of the part, wet versus dry hair, a fresh blow-dry and volumizing product, camera angle, even a subtle change in hair color that reads as density. None of these require the product to have done anything. Advertising regulators have ruled against hair brands for before-and-after imagery they couldn't substantiate, which tells you the problem is common enough to litigate.
And it gets worse than staging. Hair-loss forums have repeatedly documented sellers stealing real users' progress photos, lifting someone's genuine minoxidil or transplant results off Reddit and slapping them under a serum that had nothing to do with them. If a before-and-after looks dramatic, reverse-image-search it. The tell: dramatic results with inconsistent lighting, changed styling, no timeframe, and no way to verify the person is a real customer. The most honest thing a brand can do here is what we do: refuse to run before-and-afters at all, and instead teach you how to track your own progress with controlled photos so you're comparing like with like.
Question 7: Does the bold percentage link to an actual study?
A percentage floating free of a citation is the purest form of the con. "97% saw thicker hair." Ninety-seven percent of whom? Measured how? Over what timeframe? Against what control? If the brand had a real published study behind that number, linking it would be trivial and would only strengthen the claim, so when the link is missing, assume the number can't survive being clicked. Often the "97%" is a satisfaction survey of a self-selected group who already paid for the product and want to feel good about it, which measures loyalty, not hair.
The rule is simple: a percentage you can't trace to a described study is not evidence, it's typography. Real numbers come with a sample size, a duration, a control group, and somewhere to check them. We say the same thing in our biotin evidence check: if the data were public, the brand would show you; when it hides, that's the answer.
Now turn it on us: how Unfurl scores
A framework we only aim at competitors would be its own kind of snake oil. So here's Unfurl graded on our own seven questions, honestly.
Drug claims (pass). We don't claim to regrow, treat, or cure anything. Our serums support the appearance of fuller-looking hair; that's the ceiling, and we keep to it even though the bigger claim would sell harder.
Ingredient study vs. finished-product study (partial, and this is our real limitation). This is where we take the hit. Our evidence is ingredient-level, not finished-product-level. There is published human and lab work on peptides, on saw palmetto, on rosemary, but we have not run a randomized, placebo-controlled trial on the exact bottle we sell. By our own Question 2, that means you should read our support as "contains actives with some evidence," not "this product is clinically proven." We won't tell you otherwise. This is not finasteride; it will not lower your DHT; it is a well-formulated cosmetic serum whose ingredients have plausible, mostly-preliminary support, and whose real active is your consistency over three to four months.

Funding and blinding (pass on honesty). We don't cite a secret in-house trial, because we don't have one to hide. Every study we lean on is somebody else's published, checkable work, and we name its limitations.
"Clinically proven" / "proprietary complex" (pass). We use neither. What's the fastest way to tell if a hair product is snake oil?

Does "clinically proven" mean anything?

How do I know if a before-and-after photo is fake?
