TL;DR

Biotin supplementation reliably helps hair only when you have a genuine biotin deficiency, and deficiency is uncommon in anyone eating a normal mixed diet. In people who aren't deficient, the published evidence that extra biotin does anything for hair is thin to nonexistent. Worse, the high doses sold for hair can distort common blood tests, including troponin and thyroid panels, which is why the FDA has issued formal warnings. Biotin is the vitamin most likely to be sitting in your cabinet right now with "hair, skin & nails" on the label. It's in gummies, in tall pink bottles, in the multivitamin your friend swears by. It is also, on the current evidence, the most oversold ingredient in the entire hair aisle, not because it's fake, but because the one situation where it genuinely works is rare, and the marketing has quietly deleted that qualifier.

This piece is the honest version. What biotin actually is, the narrow case where it helps, why that case probably isn't you, and a safety issue that matters more than the hair question: high-dose biotin can make your lab results lie. We'll also say plainly why there's no biotin bottle in our catalog. What is biotin, and what does it actually do?

Biotin is vitamin B7, a water-soluble vitamin your body uses as a cofactor for a handful of carboxylase enzymes involved in metabolizing fats, carbohydrates, and protein. It is genuinely essential; you need it to live. The question was never whether biotin matters biologically. The question is whether taking more of it than you already get does anything for hair.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements biotin fact sheet sets the adequate intake for adults at just 30 micrograms a day. Sit with that number, because the "hair growth" bottles on the shelf routinely deliver 5,000 to 10,000 micrograms, 160 to 330 times the amount your body is defined as needing. There is no established mechanism by which loading up hundreds of times over the requirement helps a system that was never short in the first place. Biotin is water-soluble; the surplus your body can't use is largely excreted.

And here is the part the marketing leaves out: frank biotin deficiency is uncommon in people eating a varied diet. Biotin is in eggs, nuts, seeds, salmon, organ meats, sweet potatoes, and it's also synthesized by gut bacteria. The NIH ODS fact sheet notes that deficiency is rare in the general population of developed countries. If you eat food, you are probably not deficient.

Does biotin help hair grow, or not?

For most people, no, and the best evidence saying so comes from researchers who went looking specifically. In 2017, Patel, Swink, and Castelo-Soccio published a review of biotin for hair loss in Skin Appendage Disorders. They searched the published literature for every case they could find of biotin improving hair or nails, and they found 18. In every single one, the patient had an underlying pathology: an inherited enzyme disorder, a diagnosed deficiency, or a condition that depletes biotin. All 18 improved on biotin. Not one of them was an otherwise-healthy person taking biotin to thicken normal hair.

Read that finding the way the authors meant it: the entire evidence base for biotin-and-hair is a collection of cases where something was medically wrong to begin with. Correcting a real deficiency corrects the hair problem the deficiency caused. That's not a hair supplement working; that's medicine fixing a specific broken thing. The review's own conclusion is that there is insufficient evidence to support biotin supplementation for hair growth in people who aren't deficient.

Later work has only reinforced the point rather than overturning it. A 2024 review in the dermatology literature, "Biotin for Hair Loss: Teasing Out the Evidence," reaches the same place: the enthusiasm has consistently run ahead of the data. This is the same pattern we've traced through the saw palmetto evidence and the peptide literature, small signals, honestly read, except with biotin the signal for non-deficient people isn't small. It's essentially absent.

So who does biotin actually help?

A real, specific set of people, and this is the honest counterweight to everything above. Biotin supplementation genuinely works when there's a true deficiency or an inborn error of biotin metabolism, and those situations are not imaginary. Who's actually at risk: people with biotinidase deficiency (a genetic condition, usually caught in newborn screening); people who eat large amounts of raw egg white regularly, because raw avidin binds biotin and blocks its absorption; people on long-term anti-seizure medications like valproate, phenytoin, or carbamazepine; people with certain malabsorption conditions; and some pregnant women, who can drift toward marginal biotin status. In these groups, deficiency can genuinely show up as thinning hair, brittle nails, and a scaly rash, and correcting it genuinely helps.

If you're in one of those categories, this article is not telling you biotin is useless. It's telling you to get evaluated, because your case is the exception the marketing is quietly borrowing to sell to everyone else. Why the lab-test warning matters more than the hair question

Here is the part of the biotin story that belongs in a headline, not a footnote: high-dose biotin can make your blood tests wrong, and the errors can be dangerous. The FDA has issued a formal safety communication warning that biotin can significantly interfere with certain lab tests and cause incorrect results that may go undetected.

The mechanism is unglamorous. Many modern lab tests are immunoassays built on the biotin–streptavidin binding system. Flood the bloodstream with supplemental biotin and you can throw off the reading. The FDA has specifically flagged falsely low troponin results, the exact test used to diagnose a heart attack, meaning a person mid-cardiac-event could get a reassuring number that isn't real. The agency reported a death linked to this interference. Biotin also skews thyroid panels, which can produce a lab picture that mimics Graves' disease or hyperthyroidism and send someone toward a workup, or a medication change, they never needed. Endocrinologists have documented exactly this: when thyroid labs don't add up, ask the patient about biotin.

None of this is exotic. The doses that cause interference are the same "hair, skin & nails" megadoses sold over the counter. If you take high-dose biotin and you have bloodwork coming up, especially cardiac or thyroid, tell the ordering clinician, and ask how long to stop it beforehand. This is the rare case where a hair supplement's biggest risk has nothing to do with your hair.

What should you do instead?

Start by not solving a problem you may not have. If your diet is reasonable, extra biotin is very unlikely to move your hair, and the honest first step is figuring out what's actually driving the thinning: a nutrient gap worth testing, a hormonal shift, an androgen pattern, or a temporary shed after a stressor. A clinician and a short panel (ferritin, thyroid, vitamin D, sometimes a hormonal look) will tell you more than any bottle. If your labs are normal and the pattern is diffuse midlife thinning, the levers that have actual mechanistic support are topical and behavioral, not a B-vitamin megadose.
