In a 2013 study in the International Journal of Trichology, researchers soaked hair samples from 15 volunteers in hard water (about 212 ppm calcium carbonate) versus distilled water over 30 days and measured them on a universal strength tester. They found no significant difference in tensile strength or elasticity between the two. Read the size honestly (it's a small, ex vivo study, not a population trial), but its direction is clear: hard water changed how the hair sat and looked without measurably weakening it.

That fits everyday experience. Hard water makes hair feel rougher, look duller, tangle more, and resist a clean rinse, because there's a mineral film on the cuticle and because the same minerals stop shampoo from lathering properly, so people scrub harder and use more product. Those are surface and handling problems. They are annoying and worth fixing. They are not the same as your follicles failing.

So does hard water cause hair loss?

  • Clarify on a cadence. A clarifying wash every one to two weeks strips accumulated mineral film and product buildup that daily shampoo leaves behind. If your hair goes flat and dull between washes in a hard-water area, this is the highest-yield, cheapest move. How often you wash the rest of the time is a matter of hair type rather than water hardness, and the American Academy of Dermatology's healthy-hair guidance notes that straight, oily hair may tolerate daily shampooing while dry, textured, or curly hair often needs washing far less frequently, and that wet hair is the most fragile hair you own. Hard water doesn't change that calculus; it just makes the residue more noticeable.
